A single Lyot stage of the LCTF system is a "sandwich" of birefringent liquid crystal, glass, quartz, and sheet polarizers.
To achieve monochromatic optical throughput in the LCTF, a series of these "sandwiches" are stacked horizontally in order of increasing retardance.
